Dental Implants – What Are They?

Dental implantation is a procedure involving the implantation of an artificial tooth root into the upper or lower jaw bone. The stages of treatment include preparation of the patient, insertion of the implant, integration into the bone and installation of a crown or bridge. It may also be necessary to extract a tooth. After the treatment is completed, the patient should regularly check the condition of the implant and follow the dentist's oral hygiene recommendations.

Advantages of Dental Implants:

Health

With implants, you can maintain oral hygiene more easily and prevent further tooth loss. The implant is independent of the adjacent teeth. Placing an implant protects the bone in the place of the missing tooth from atrophy.

Aesthetics

Preserving bone allows one to maintain their facial features and avoid the effect of "sinking" in the face as a consequence of tooth loss. Implants look like ''real'' teeth.

Durability and Comfort

The visible part of the ‘’tooth‘’, is made of porcelain, set on titanium or zirconium elements. Implants fulfil their role for up to several decades.

Bone Augmentation

Bone augmentation in dentistry is a procedure designed to increase the volume of bone in order to prepare it for a future implant or prosthetic device. The dentist carefully assesses the condition of the patient’s bone and then chooses the appropriate augmentation technique, including augmentation with the patient’s own bone, synthetic material, or using a collagen membrane. The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia, and afterwards the patient must follow appropriate instructions and regularly monitor the bone condition.

Dental implants in London - patient's questions

At Prefect Smile, we use the highest quality implants from the Swiss company Zimmer.
Absolute contraindications to implant placement are extremely rare. In the case of medical conditions such as diabetes, certain cardiovascular diseases or joint diseases, you will generally need to consult the physician treating the condition in question. Implants are not placed in people under the age of 16 due to incomplete development of bone structures. Certain lifestyle changes may be necessary – for example, smoking increases the risk of implant rejection, so we recommend quitting or reducing smoking.
In some cases, the condition of the upper and lower jaw bone may make it impossible to place an implant, especially if atrophy has already occurred. In such cases, it is often possible to carry out a bone augmentation procedure to enable the placement of implants. The placement of an implant is always preceded by a full diagnostic procedure to determine the condition of the bone.
The placement of a single implant takes approximately 25 minutes.
The only local limitation is the condition of the alveolar bones in the lower and upper jaw, the areas where implants are placed. Whether we carry out the procedure largely depends on the condition of the upper and lower jaw bone. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a full diagnostic procedure to determine the condition and quality of the bone. In cases of bone deficiency, bone reconstruction is performed first, followed by an implantological procedure.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, just like traditional dental treatment procedures (extraction, root canal treatment, etc.).  It is a less invasive procedure than, for example, the extraction of a multi-rooted tooth. After the procedure, the gum is often moderately painful, bruised and swollen for a few days, which can usually be remedied with typical painkillers. Most patients stop ”feeling” the implant within a few days after its placement.
Usually within three to six months. This is the time it takes for the osseointegration process, during which the implant “grows” into the bone of the upper or lower jaw.
Modern implants have been used for around 30 years, and analysis results show that this is an extremely effective method of replacing missing teeth. Implants typically ”take” in 95% of cases. It is estimated that in 90% of patients, the implants will function well throughout their lifetime. In people who smoke cigarettes and abuse alcohol significantly, the failure rate is slightly higher and can reach 10-15%.

What our patients say:

Full professionalism and a friendly service! I went there with pain in my molar, I was afraid it would hurt, but I got a good anaesthetic and didn’t even feel a thing, and I had root canal treatment. The filling fits nicely and the shade is well chosen. Huge relief! The best Polish dentist in London!
