Surgical Tooth Extraction – When to Perform?
The main reason for surgical extraction of a tooth is its abnormal growth. This is particularly true of wisdom teeth, which often erupt at the wrong angle, do not have sufficient space to grow or are partially stuck in the jawbone. Such situations can lead to pain, infection and also negatively affect the other teeth and the appearance of the bite.
Another reason to undergo surgical tooth extraction is advanced damage to the tooth that makes effective conservative treatment impossible. This is usually the result of deep caries, trauma or advanced gum disease leading to loss of bone support of the tooth.
Surgical extraction of wisdom teeth or other teeth may also be necessary if the mouth needs to be prepared for other orthodontic or prosthodontic procedures, such as the fitting of fixed braces.
Preparing for Surgical Extraction of Wisdom Teeth
Preparing for surgical tooth extraction is an important step to ensure patient safety and comfort, as well as to increase the effectiveness of the procedure itself. Here are the important steps to take before undergoing the procedure at our clinic:
- Consultation with a dentist and oral surgeon – during the consultation, we carefully examine the condition of the patient’s mouth. We order X-rays so that we can clearly assess the position of the tooth and the condition of the bone and surrounding tissues.
- General health review – the patient must inform the doctor of any existing medical conditions and any medication they are taking. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, and medications, such as anticoagulants, can affect the procedure and the healing process of the wound created after the surgical removal of a wisdom tooth.
- Pre-procedure instructions – the doctor gives detailed instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. These usually include fasting recommendations (the patient must not eat certain foods for several hours before the procedure if general anaesthesia is planned), as well as oral hygiene tips.
Extraction of Wisdom Teeth
The extraction of third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, is a surgical procedure that requires precision and experience. The process is carried out when wisdom teeth cause health problems such as pain, infection, or negatively affect the other teeth. Each time, the patient must be qualified by us for the procedure.
- Anaesthesia – the wisdom teeth extraction procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia, which eliminates pain in the treatment area. In some cases, especially for more complex extractions, general anaesthesia may be used.
- Access to the tooth – the surgeon makes an incision in the gum to access the tooth and surrounding bone. Depending on the position of the tooth, it may be necessary to remove some of the bone or split the tooth into smaller pieces to make extraction easier.
- Extraction of the tooth – once adequate access has been achieved, the tooth is gently removed from the alveolus (socket). In the case of teeth partially stuck in the bone (impacted teeth), this process may require extra precision and care.
- Cleaning the alveolus – after the tooth has been extracted, the alveolus is thoroughly cleaned to remove any remaining tooth tissue or bone. This procedure is implemented to prevent infection and promote healing.
- Suturing the wound – the surgeon then closes the incision with sutures. Sutures that are dissolvable and do not need to be removed are most commonly used.
- Post-operative instructions – after the procedure, the patient is given detailed instructions related to further management, including recommendations concerning diet, oral hygiene and the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
